A wikipedia entry describes it best in the following paragraph. — The phenomenon can be explained by the notion that, if an entity is sufficiently non-humanlike, then the humanlike characteristics will tend to stand out and be noticed easily, generating empathy. On the other hand, if the entity is “almost human”, then the non-human characteristics will be the ones that stand out, leading to a feeling of “strangeness” in the human viewer. In other words, a robot stuck inside the uncanny valley is no longer being judged by the standards of a robot doing a good job at pretending to be human, but is instead being judged by the standards of a human doing a terrible job at acting like a normal person.

Finer Points: In addition to observing plot and character, here are some other suggestions to consider in a close read.

1. Observe scenes. • 2. Study dialogue. • 3. Locate passages that establish the setting.  • 4. Note the conflict the author has created for the central character. • 5. Chart the novel’s resolution.

1. Observe scenes. A scene is one episode in the story line.  A scene can be dialogue between characters or an event that happens in one particular location.  Generally, when the location changes, the scene has shifted.  Note how the author gets in and out of each scene.  Note the number of scenes the writer includes in each chapter.

2. Study dialogue. Does the conversation sound natural? How do you know who’s speaking? How does the dialogue reveal the character’s individual personalities and move the plot forward?

3. Locate passages that establish the setting.  What techniques does the author use to place the reader in a particular locale? Which sense does he use to establish the environment’s reality? Is history used?

4. Note the conflict the author has created for the central character.  The conflict can be great or small – a family matter or a national crisis.  How has the author made the character’s life complex?  How quickly is this core conflict revealed in the novel? How does the writer sustain the complicate the conflict throughout the novel?

5. Chart the novel’s resolution. When does the author begin to resolve the conflicts? What bridges has he constructed early in the novel that result in the closing chapter’s conclusions? How does the writer make resolutions natural and satisfying to the reader?
