Must be Monday

February 23, 2009

I forgot my coffee mug this morning.
I made a mistake at work. The mistake was compounded.
The mistake later cost money and through a series of unfortunate events, was on press all day.
My boss called me a dumbass.
I caught the button on the back pocket on my jeans on the chair, it’s ripped. I have fruit stripe underwear on.
I feel like reconnecting with a friend has hit a speedbump.
It’s still one hour til 5.

9/10 of yesterday

February 19, 2009

I spoke with a mutual friend of “ours” a few days ago about “us.”  You were on my mind at least nine tenths of yesterday.  The good memories and the not so great times, the pros and the cons. What I loved about the relationship.  What I wish had been there.  Brief texts between you and I made me feel better.  Made me feel that I hadn’t shut down quite the way I thought I may have about some things.  Reaffirmed my feelings that you were unable to meet halfway on some things. Overall, I still miss you even though logic was against us from the beginning.

you were on my mind at least nine tenths of yesterday
it seemed as if perhaps I’d gone insane
what is it about you that has commandeered my brain?
maybe it’s your awesome songs or maybe it’s the way
you go straight to the top you’re not scared of getting squashed
you know just when to jump off
you’re so brave
and then you run to the right it seems
there’s no hope in sight
and you drop down to the tube that takes
you right to level eight
life is a highway and I’m gonna ride it
every day’s a winding road yeah
my rollercoaster’s got the biggest ups and downs
as long as it keeps goin’ round its unbelievable
life is a highway and I’m gonna ride it
every day’s a winding road yeah
my rollercoaster’s got the biggest ups and downs
as long as it keeps goin’ round its unbelievable

Uncanny Valley

February 18, 2009

I love this concept. I first heard it on NPR while driving home from work Monday.

It was a piece on the CG in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php

A wikipedia entry describes it best in the following paragraph. — The phenomenon can be explained by the notion that, if an entity is sufficiently non-humanlike, then the humanlike characteristics will tend to stand out and be noticed easily, generating empathy. On the other hand, if the entity is “almost human”, then the non-human characteristics will be the ones that stand out, leading to a feeling of “strangeness” in the human viewer. In other words, a robot stuck inside the uncanny valley is no longer being judged by the standards of a robot doing a good job at pretending to be human, but is instead being judged by the standards of a human doing a terrible job at acting like a normal person.

*~ 2009 ~*

January 1, 2009

Below this entry are old journal entries collected from a number of sites. I’ve always been an erratic stop and start blogger. Also, a bit of a big thinker, yet little do’er. You’ll see…

Hot pink EDITS: are spots along the way where I’ve gone back and re-read old posts and just felt the need to update.

Quote – A.J. Cronin

May 17, 2007

“Life is no straight and easy corridor along

which we travel free and unhampered,

but a maze of passages,

through which we must seek our way,

lost and confused, now and again

checked in a blind alley.

But always, if we have faith,

a door will open for us,

not perhaps the one that we ourselves

would ever have thought of,

but one that will ultimately

prove good for us.”

Finer Points – Writing Basics (pg.15) • May 2007

May 12, 2007

Read like a writer.  Learn how to be a keen reader and pick up tricks of the trade  from the writers you love best.

Finer Points: In addition to observing plot and character, here are some other suggestions to consider in a close read.

1. Observe scenes. • 2. Study dialogue. • 3. Locate passages that establish the setting.  • 4. Note the conflict the author has created for the central character. • 5. Chart the novel’s resolution.
